Success with Sanitary Conveyor

Posted by Debbie Hoff on Tue, Nov 03, 2015 @ 08:28 AM

Sanitary_Belt-resized-600.jpgA highlight, for Nercon, at Pack Expo Las Vegas 2015 was our Sanitary Conveyor. The popular display showcased the stainless steel modular belt conveyor with removable wearstrips and return rollers available in both homogenous blue belt and sideflexing Mat-Style designs for diverse applications including inclines, declines and trough conveyors. Our Sanitary Conveyors are an excellent choice for handling raw food, bulk food, packaged food and pharmaceutical products. Competitively priced and constructed of washdown stainless steel, they feature a sanitary welded design that minimizes flat surfaces and eliminates bacteria-prone tubular components in favor of solid round components. Although modular by design, each conveyor is tailored to fit product handling, cleaning, sanitation and safety requirements.

Nercon offers multiple conveyor finishes to achieve the desired Roughness Average (RA) including No. 4 polish, 2B mill, bead blasting finish or mechanical polishing of direct food contact areas. By selecting the proper materials and finish, sanitation time and cleaning costs are greatly reduced. A new clean-out hole design allows sanitation access to the inside of the conveyor for washdown while still protecting operators.

Due to the modular design of the Sanitary Conveyor, Nercon can offer fast delivery and quick installation. With lower costs, industry-best lead times, reduced installation and start-up requirements, it’s easy to see why our Sanitary Conveyor was a hit at Pack Expo Las Vegas 2015.

Nercon Continues Commitment to Providing Customer Value

Posted by Debbie Hoff on Wed, Aug 05, 2015 @ 10:35 AM

The foundation of Nercon's business model is providing our customers with value in the increasingly competitive manufacturing arena. Our vision statement of “Be the leader in customer value, best price for needed function,” is more of a reality than ever before with the recent strides we have taken in our processes- from system concept through customer install. We recognize that our customer’s time and resources are at a premium more than ever before and being able to provide our product and services successfully to meet these growing demands is a must. By streamlining many of our processes and giving our customer choices they are able to look at what they want and what they need and evaluate that against the different cost and lead time associated with each of their choices.

Preferred Equipment Line

Our preferred line is our latest company initiative to provide value and flexibility to our customers. By combing the use of standardized equipment and designs we are able to save customers money and time wherever possible. The preferred line is increasing in variety Mat style LBPchain RGBand offerings, as we are able to build off of customer feedback and look at the trends we see in systems purchased. Currently we offer “Nercon Preferred” in tabletop, mat-style, and belt varieties of conveyor. Current tabletop preferred lines exist in 3.25, 4.5, 7.5, and 12 inch wide chain with open frame design and include a variety of length increments, frame depths, copes, and either an end drive or center drive. The mat-style preferred line is similar in variety but can be found in different chain widths of 6, 12, 18, and 24-inch and is an open top design. Recently, we have also rolled out our preferred belt line that is offered in 4, 8, 12, 18, and 24-inch wide varieties in order to efficiently and effectively provide value to our growing belt conveyor customer base. By capitalizing on proven design and standardized components, using any of the components on our preferred lines will help our customers limit the use of their valuable resources and hit project installs in a timely manner.

Value Proposal

The value proposal is a concept that our sales and applications engineering department have implemented based on leveraging our preferred equipment lines to provide a well-functioning, cost savings solution to the customer whenever possible and acceptable. By evaluating the needs of your application, our sales and applications department will craft a quote that utilizes as many preferred components as possible. We are able to adhere to your product handling and environmental constraints, and offer a price for a solution that we stand behind; one that ensures the shortest delivery time and highest cost savings. In addition to the value quote, the customer will have the visibility and flexibility of customizing their system with certain "non-preferred" components that they must have. Any special customer requests will be line itemed out below the value quote price and the additional cost of these special components, and a total system cost will be shown at the bottom of the proposal. This gives the customer the best of both worlds, in a sense; they are able to decide what components are truly justified and custom craft their quote in a way that meets their functionality demands as well as their budget demands.

 Single Source Manufacturing

None of this would be possible without one of the premier manufacturing facilities in our industry. With a combined manufacturing capacity of over 250,000 square feet we are able to manufacture our systems from fabrication through FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) all under one roof. From the moment a project is released into manufacturing, the CNC equipment is integrated with the assPainting_1-resized-600.jpgociated CAD, eliminating mistakes and creating ideal parts that are easily repeatable. As an Allen Bradley build partner and UL approved panel shop, our customers can leverage our controls capabilities instead of having to contract out to yet another vendor. In addition to creating all components in house, we are able to assemble mechanical components, wire up control panels and debug, and simulate the line in order to eliminate as much field install time as possible. Our detailed engineering is also housed at this facility giving our systems the unique quality of being looked at on a daily basis by eyes from different disciplines within the manufacturing process. The basis of all of these things is that we are consistently listening to our customers and keeping at the front end of manufacturing trends in order to continually improve our product and increase the value we are able to provide to our customer’s production lines. As recently as 2014 we made a significant investment to provide a full service powder coat paint line in house, eliminating the cost and time associated with applications that do not require stainless steel construction.

Nercon Eng. & Mfg., Inc. Announces New Product: Modular Vertical Lift

Posted by Steve Anklam on Wed, Jan 15, 2014 @ 01:01 PM

Nercon Engineering and Manufacturing, Inc. is excited to announce a new product addition to our conveyor and package handling equipment line. We are excited to announce that our vertical lift is now modular in design and can be easily adjusted for multiple product uses and  heights.

The vertical gripper lift/lowerator has modular features in three major areas. First is the ability to change the elevation of the in-feed and/or discharge in 6” increments, second is the choice of “C” or “S” configuration of the system, “C” for reorienting product and “S” for elevating or lowering  product.  The choice of the hand wheel location on either the left or right hand side of the system is our third modular feature, which allows for more placement options.

The modular gripper, also known as a vertical lift, is suitable for many different industries and can elevate or lower: glass bottles, cans, plastic containers, and pouches, bundles of tissue, cartons and small cases. The continuous movement and gentle handling of the product minimizes damage and backups.

The video above demonstrates the ability to grip round and non-round containers.

Shop Floor Spotlight: Nercon’s Newest Servo Sweep

Posted by Steve Anklam on Tue, Dec 17, 2013 @ 09:47 AM

One of our most recent projects was a Servo Sweep system engineered to separate ice cream sandwiches of multiple sizes in order to achieve maximum cooling in the freezer. Servo Sweeps are typically used in conveying cartons, trays and small boxes applications, but can be engineered to sweep any product that can withstand the motion without being damaged. For this system, the sweep was designed to handle the relatively delicate product at a faster rate, yet be smooth and quiet.

As the video abovLocked Cage Gaurde demonstrates, alternate bars are discharged down the line. The challenge was to consistently create the spacing between bars and create the alternate pattern—which was accomplished by creating a stop block. Another challenge was to create a rapid sweeping motion to meet the required product rate of 180 sandwiches per minutes without damaging the bars. The use of the metal flights attached to the timing belt and dual-position product stops and infeed guides allowed for greater product and speed control in order to minimize damage and jams.

Multiple photo eyes were mounted to track the product and keep the timing of the sweep in line with the product. Also, a safety key attached to a movable guard cage was put in place to signal if the cage is in the down position.

Matt Smith, Field Service Supervisor for this project, spoke about the customer’s previous pneumatic systems that didn’t accomplish what they were looking for, “they weren’t happy with the performance of the pneumatics and wanted to go to a servo motor based system, which would be smoother, more consistent and more accurate.”

Lock Key

With this new system in place, the customer’s product can be properly conveyed with an air gap and frozen.

Nercon's Pressureless Combiners: For Your Single-Filing Needs

Posted by Steve Anklam on Tue, Nov 12, 2013 @ 12:03 PM

The Pressureless Combiner uses multiple belts and carefully calculated chain speeds in order to single file products or containers. There is no back-pressure using this combining method which prevents scratching, denting, and breakage of the label and the container.

Another advantage of pressureless combining is that very little rail adjustment is needed with product changeover. In fact, the Pressureless Combiner can be used to handle a variety of products ranging from plastic industrial containers, as well as non-round or hard-to-handle containers. Guide rail systems are designed to customer specifications and conveying product requirements.

Nercon's conveyor specialists can utilize a full range of table-top and high performance plastic mat-style carrying chains best suited for the application.

Conveyor Basics: Identify The Chain Material You Need

Posted by Steve Anklam on Tue, Oct 15, 2013 @ 10:23 AM

conveyor chain types

An environment that does not have significant product or manufacturing related effects during production is considered a general application environment. In these applications, Nercon offers standard chain choices that provide cost effective purchases.  In other applications, the chain selection may be much more involved depending on the product(s). Belting material and construction will define the performance advantages that are offered. The following are chain material types commonly used in packaging handling conveyors and what their properties are.
  • Polypropylene: A standard, relatively strong chain material for general applications. It is chemically resistant to many acids, bases, salts and alcohols. It may become somewhat brittle when used in cold temperatures.
  • Polyethylene: Offers high impact strength and flexibility with resistance to fatigue. It is also chemically resistant to many acids, bases and hydrocarbons.
  • Acetal: Is stronger than polypropylene and polyethylene with a good balance of mechanical, thermal and chemical properties. Acetal thermoplastics also have a low coefficient of friction.
  • Nylon: Can be used in place of standard Acetal for impact intensive applications. Nylon, however, does absorb water and is more susceptible to damage than Acetal.
Check out our download “Key Principles in Evaluating Chains for Packaging Applications,” if you would like to learn more about how to evaluate packaging types of conveyor chain.

High Temperature Product Handling Conveyors

Posted by Steve Anklam on Tue, Oct 08, 2013 @ 12:02 PM

Nercon has designed and engineered conveyor systems for food and consumer goods manufacturers in temperatures ranging from 210 degrees to 40 below zero F. In this blog post, here are some examples of high temperature product handling conveyors:

Steam Shrink Tunnel Conveyors:  Nercon supplies the linear vacuum chain conveyor that utilizes feed screws to space apart containers for steam shrink tunnels, manufactured by PDC. PDC is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) that makes shrink labeling equipment. The conveyors utilize special wear strip construction and wear strip mounting to allow for thermal expansion in the 210 degree steam tunnels.

Hot Sauce Filling Conveyors: Nercon has also engineered heat tunnel conveyors for hot sauce filling lines.  In the video, the tunnels each had independent thermal controls varying from 120 degrees to 160 degrees F, and were used to pre-heat the glass before filling the jars with 200 degree F sauce. This equipment and heating process reduced breakage and waste typically caused from thermal shock. In the tunnels, conveyors were supplied with stainless steel chain and brass wear strips to withstand the hot temperatures.

Oven Infeed Conveyors: Nercon has also engineered oven infeed conveyors and baking pan handling lines, including the 12 ft. wide wire mesh conveyor shown in the video. A row of eight pans are fed into the 450 degree F oven utilizing an automatic sweep.
